Amy (Mira Sorvino) is a hard working, New York architect who is desperately in need of a relaxing vacation. While on vacation she meets and falls in love with Virgil Adamson (Val Kilmer), a seductive massage therapist. After being swept away with his massage, she discovers he is blind. Although Virgil is content with being blind, Amy convinces him to under go experimental eye surgery. Following the surgery Virgil is able to see for the first time since he was three. However, they discover it reveals a much larger challenge, sight association. Virgil is confronted with the fact that even though he can physically see, he does not realize what he is seeing without feeling it first. While dealing with this challenge they discover that his sight is temporary and he will eventually be totally blind again. At First Sight starts out as a love story, but ends up being more about Virgils challenges. Even though I enjoyed this movie very much, I would have enjoyed it more had they focused on either the love story or his challenges. If you dont know most of the medical terms they use you will be easily confused. Val Kilmer is very convincing in his role of a blind man. He makes you feel very grateful for what we take for granted every day. If you have a soft heart, like I do, for "glamorized" movies then you will surely enjoy this movie. ...

He received his education at the United States Military Academy and then eventually became a Union General in the U.S. civil war. Misery Loves Company Salamano and his dog have a strange relationship. They are always together and even look similar, but Salamano is constantly beating the dog. One would think that since the dog was Salamano’s only companion then he would treat it better. Salamano and his dog symbolize the absurdity that occurs in our everyday life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Both the dog and Salamano have reddish scabs and the dog has â€Å"sort of taken on his masters stooped look, muzzle down, neck straining†(pg. 27). They’ve been together for eight years, always doing the some routine, so they’ve started to take on each other’s personalities, as well as looks. They say that â€Å"misery loves company†- which is exactly the case with Salamano. He got the dog after his wife died, for companionship, but he has never really been happy. He probably figures that if he can’t be happy, then neither can the dog.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The relationship between Salamano and his dog is utterly absurd. They’ve done the same routine day in and day out for eight long years, yet neither one will ever change or learn from their mistakes. Salamano won’t learn to let the dog finish peeing so that it won’t go in the house and the dog won’t learn not to pull the leash. They are both resistant to change, probably because they don’t know anything else, except how to be miserable together.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of the most absurd things of all is how upset Salamano is when he looses his dog. He doesn’t treat the dog well or appreciate it when it’s there, but is distressed when it is missing. When Meursault suggests that he get a new dog, Salamano replies that he â€Å"was used to this one.† It’s not about loving the dog, it was about feeling comfortable and â€Å"used to† the routine that they had together.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many people are resistant to change. Intro: GOOOOOOALLLLL!!! Many of you have probably heard this if you’ve been near or heard of soccer. Originally, I had not taken surveys for the World Cup. So by a number of hands, how many of you have heard of the World Cup? I’ll be informing you all a little more knowledge about one of the biggest competitions in the world. (Change) I’ll be teaching you all about the history of the World Cup, awards given during the competition, and about the next World Cup. (CHANGE) First, we will be discussing the history of the FIFA World Cup.FIFA stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association. * The World Cup began back in 1930 in Uruguay and only consisted of 13 teams. * Out of those 13 teams, 7 were from South America, four from Europe, and 2 North American teams. * Henry Winter states in his article that many European nations didn’t want to participate because of the length of time to Uruguay and the fear of losing their jobs. * The W. C. occurs ever y 4 years and destination changes every time. * There have been a total of 19 World Cups, the most recent in South Africa where Spain won its first W.C. * Stan Collymore states the country that has won the World Cup the most times is Brazil, by winning the W. C. 5 times and running up twice. The second nation would be Italy, by winning 4 times and running up twice. The third is Germany by winning 3 times and running up 4 times. * The U. S. has hosted the W. C. once in 1994. * Matches were held in 9 different cities * They were in Detroit, San Francisco, New York City, Orlando, Chicago, Dallas, Boston, and Washington D. C. Now that we’ve gone over some of the history, let’s talk about awards that are won. DuBois and the Equality of Education essays The United States of America has always stood as the land of opportunity, the land of equality; however, the African American journey toward cultural equality has been a complex and laborious one that still continues today. The passing of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments in the second half of the 19th century did not instantly bring about equal rights and liberties. Instead, the country remained solidly divided upon racial lines which favored white people, and were only solidified with Supreme Court decisions, and the individual states endorsement of the Jim Crow laws. However, not all African Americans believed the answer to equality was in desegregation. William Edward Burghardt DuBois, founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.), believed that the current separate but equal policies could be used for the advancement of the community as a whole, and integrating the schools would only have a negative impact on black childrens educations. He asserted that the best way for blacks to hope to achieve equality with other Americans would be through concentrated pursuit of the equal portion of the clause. In the 1950s DuBois own N.A.A.C.P. took on the Plessy decision articulating that African Americans would no longer compromise. The initial onset of the enforcement of the decision brought the great hardships to black students that DuBois had been so fearful of. Fifty years have passed since the desegregation of Americas schools began, yet racial divisions still exist; it is important to consider perhaps DuBois was correct. Before Brown v. Board and even Plessy v. Ferguson, an improved system of education was on the rise for African Americans. The Mystery of Life and Death Essays The Mystery of Life and Death Essay The Mystery of Life and Death Essay The Mystery of Life and Death In the 1995 movie Breather, William Wallace presents lifes uncertainties and how we should live each day when he affirms, Every man dies. Not every man really lives. Sharon Oldies poem, Summer Solstice, New York City, is an ideal representation of this quotation and the questions that we have about how to live our day-to-day lives. This brief poem is about a man who is standing on a rooftop contemplating suicide and the New York City policemen who are attempting to save his life. At first, a brief summary is all that the reader sees in the story, but upon peer analysis, the fragility of life shines through. With each detail, or lack thereof, Olds reveals her views on the uncertainties of this life. The Summer Solstice is known as the longest day of the year, and in placing the setting on the Summer Solstice, Olds presents the reader with a lengthy period of time. In the first line, when Olds says that he could not stand it (1) anymore, it presents the concept of a long day, or in the case of the man, a long life and a long time coming. We do not know what has been happening in the mans life, but whatever it is has led him to desire to commit suicide. The man on the rooftops identity remains a complete mystery throughout the entirety of the poem. There is no physical description of the man; the descriptions in the story are of his actions. The lack of description of the man allows readers to apply the mans actions and the story to themselves, rather than merely reading a poem and remaining on the outside. We barely know anything of the mans story except that by the end of the longest day of the year he could not stand it (1). The question remains: What could the man not stand anymore? Some of us may have felt his pain before and are able to fully relate to feeling suicidal, while others understand the concept of being increasingly upset with someone or something. In her word choice, Olds invites the reader to identify with the man and his struggle, whatever our identification with the matter may be. As the man is standing on the roof, he is poised between life and his immediate death. When the man reaches the edge of the roof, without hesitation, he putts] one leg over the complex green tin cornice (4). Hesitation begins to rush over him once he puts his leg over the edge. As the mans leg [hangs] over the lip of the next oral (18), the readers are given strong imagery of how quickly ones life can change. One half of his body is pointed toward life, while the other half of his body is on the side of death; any quick movement in each direction could determine the mans life. This description compares to our lives directly; any action that we take could determine our lives forever. This mystery of death is what attracts all of the people below; they are prepared for the worst. The people [gather] in the street, silent (19) as the cops came in their suits blue-gray (7); they watch as the hairy net with its implacable grid was unfolded near the curb and spread out and stretched as the sheet is prepared to receive at birth (20-22). The scene that is described here is one of waiting on the possibility of death. The policemen are working to prevent what could happen, while the bystanders are awaiting a finale, watching the man balance they are merely interested in the aspect of danger and the fear of someone dangling at such a high altitude with no obvious desire to walk away from the edge. The people standing down below are attempting to place themselves into the mind of the an up on the rooftop understand why he is standing on the edge of the building and why he has not yet Jumped. We are left guessing as to what brings the man to spare his life. Was he actually suicidal? Did the policemen convince him not to take his own life? We are never told the reasons for the mans not Jumping from the building; we only know that everything stopped as his body Jerked and he stepped down from the parapet and went toward them (27-29). We are presented with so few details so that we are able to compare the actions of the man to our own previous experiences or actions. The Nans actions were Just as possible as those which he did not take. The outcome could have been different, and the purpose of the story would remain the same. Life is uncertain, and the line between life and death is extremely thin. As the Summer Solstice marked the official beginning of summer, ancient civilizations used this opportunity to celebrate by throwing festivals and enjoying the day together (Dunlap Patch). At these celebrations, participants would have a bonfire to celebrate the sun and its rays and power (Dunlap Patch). These celebrations connect directly with the ending of the poem, when the policemen have adhered around the man and continue to smoke cigarettes that burned like the tiny campfires we lit at night back at the beginning of the world (38-40). Though the ending of the poem can be interpreted in various ways, the relationship between Summer Solstice, New York City and the holiday for which the poem is named is clear to the reader after further analysis. The comparison between life and death has been depicted in various ways throughout literature and all areas of the arts because audiences are drawn to the mysteries behind the characters. We long for the unknown, as it opens a door to our imagination and creativity. We already have an ending to the story in our heads before the characters can present us with a resolution. Research has shown that on similar levels of an organizational hierarchy, men make almost twenty-five percent more than that earned by women. Many experts are of the opinion that pay discrimination is a myth in present globalized economy. They are of the opinion that such pay differentials largely occur due to certain social factors such as, a difference of education, choice of job and difference in career objectives. Hence, it cannot be adequately termed as discrimination. Even after taking into account such factors, it has been observed that unfair discrimination of wages still exists. Women in the modern economic world constitute almost half the workforce in most industries. Women, although are not the primary, are considered as equal breadwinners in five out of ten families in most developing nations. In most societies, women obtain similar or even more education than men. Yet, it is seen that most institutions pr efer paying women lesser. The studies conducted over gender discrimination of wages suggest that if the wage gap continues to widen as its present level, then it would take another fifty years for women to earn at the same level (Gardeazabal and Ugidos 165). Women continue to be discriminated in respect of pay, hiring, and promotions. These factors have become so common in the workplace that women have begun accepting them as part of their work life. Â  The first few years after graduation are the most important period for both men and women in respect of starting and setting up their career paths. At this time, both the counterparts are young, unmarried and have very little or no job experience.
