There is a saying that goes â€Å"History repeats itself† and it has many times. For example when the â€Å"German Democratic Republic† decided to build the Berlin Wall to keep â€Å"West Berlin from surrounding East Germany† (The Berlin 1). It was constructed to â€Å"keep out emigrants† and the â€Å"flood of refugees† (The Berlin 1). The wall failed though in November of 1989 (Why did 1). The wall Trump wants to build is just repeating history. His plan is to build a wall along the Mexican-American border to keep out illegal immigrants and drug trafficking. Even though Trump’s idea of the border wall will keep out unwanted invaders, like any country would want, it will also create diplomatic and economic conflict and environmental issues amongnMexico and the†¦show more content†¦With this in mind, if the United States does build the wall along the Mexican-American border there are high risks for Mexico or America to leave NAFTA (N orth American Free Trade Agreement). Trump has stated in his campaign trail that he wants to â€Å"renegotiate† NAFTA. NAFTA was endorsed in the 1990’s and the countries of North America have traded with this agreement ever since (Greenberg 1). Despite this agreement keeping the peace among these three countries, Trump says, in a debate, â€Å"NAFTA is the worst trade deal maybe ever signed anywhere, but certainly ever signed in this country† (Greenberg 1). He plans to revise the agreement a bit with Canada but with Mexico he, in a way, wants a new agreement stating that Mexico will pay for the wall. Trump is pushing and finding different ways to get Mexico to pay and that will just cause more problems among the countries. The President of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, has stated multiple times that Mexico won’t pay for wall and has even canceled a meeting that was supposed to bring these two presidents to talk about relations among the nations. With Nieto canceling this important meeting alrea dy shows there’s conflict among the two leaders. It doesn’t for the record and it also smells really, really bad. Who would want to be friends with someone whose hair, clothes and house smells like stale tobacco smoke? Not me, that’s for sure. Why on earth do people think their cool if they smoke IN joke shops they even sell fake cigarettes that look lit, just so people can pretend they’re smoking. But really it does not look cool and 40% of 16 year olds feel pressured into smoking by their friends and peers. Why should young people have to worry about being asked to have a smoke next time they go out with their friends when really they should be concentrating on school and GCSE’s? Misery Loves Company Salamano and his dog have a strange relationship. They are always together and even look similar, but Salamano is constantly beating the dog. One would think that since the dog was Salamano’s only companion then he would treat it better. C. 5 times and running up twice. The second nation would be Italy, by winning 4 times and running up twice. The third is Germany by winning 3 times and running up 4 times. * The U. Not every man really lives. Sharon Oldies poem, Summer Solstice, New York City, is an ideal representation of this quotation and the questions that we have about how to live our day-to-day lives. This brief poem is about a man who is standing on a rooftop contemplating suicide and the New York City policemen who are attempting to save his life. At first, a brief summary is all that the reader sees in the story, but upon peer analysis, the fragility of life shines through. With each detail, or lack thereof, Olds reveals her views on the uncertainties of this life. The Summer Solstice is known as the longest day of the year, and in placing the setting on the Summer Solstice, Olds presents the reader with a lengthy period of time. In the first line, when Olds says that he could not stand it (1) anymore, it presents the concept of a long day, or in the case of the man, a long life and a long time coming. We do not know what has been happening in the mans life, but whatever it is has led him to desire to commit suicide. The man on the rooftops identity remains a complete mystery throughout the entirety of the poem. There is no physical description of the man; the descriptions in the story are of his actions. The lack of description of the man allows readers to apply the mans actions and the story to themselves, rather than merely reading a poem and remaining on the outside. We barely know anything of the mans story except that by the end of the longest day of the year he could not stand it (1). The question remains: What could the man not stand anymore? Some of us may have felt his pain before and are able to fully relate to feeling suicidal, while others understand the concept of being increasingly upset with someone or something. In her word choice, Olds invites the reader to identify with the man and his struggle, whatever our identification with the matter may be. As the man is standing on the roof, he is poised between life and his immediate death. When the man reaches the edge of the roof, without hesitation, he putts] one leg over the complex green tin cornice (4). Hesitation begins to rush over him once he puts his leg over the edge. As the mans leg [hangs] over the lip of the next oral (18), the readers are given strong imagery of how quickly ones life can change. One half of his body is pointed toward life, while the other half of his body is on the side of death; any quick movement in each direction could determine the mans life. This description compares to our lives directly; any action that we take could determine our lives forever. This mystery of death is what attracts all of the people below; they are prepared for the worst. The people [gather] in the street, silent (19) as the cops came in their suits blue-gray (7); they watch as the hairy net with its implacable grid was unfolded near the curb and spread out and stretched as the sheet is prepared to receive at birth (20-22). The scene that is described here is one of waiting on the possibility of death. The policemen are working to prevent what could happen, while the bystanders are awaiting a finale, watching the man balance they are merely interested in the aspect of danger and the fear of someone dangling at such a high altitude with no obvious desire to walk away from the edge. The people standing down below are attempting to place themselves into the mind of the an up on the rooftop understand why he is standing on the edge of the building and why he has not yet Jumped. We are left guessing as to what brings the man to spare his life. Was he actually suicidal? Did the policemen convince him not to take his own life? We are never told the reasons for the mans not Jumping from the building; we only know that everything stopped as his body Jerked and he stepped down from the parapet and went toward them (27-29). We are presented with so few details so that we are able to compare the actions of the man to our own previous experiences or actions. The Nans actions were Just as possible as those which he did not take. The outcome could have been different, and the purpose of the story would remain the same. Life is uncertain, and the line between life and death is extremely thin. As the Summer Solstice marked the official beginning of summer, ancient civilizations used this opportunity to celebrate by throwing festivals and enjoying the day together (Dunlap Patch). At these celebrations, participants would have a bonfire to celebrate the sun and its rays and power (Dunlap Patch). These celebrations connect directly with the ending of the poem, when the policemen have adhered around the man and continue to smoke cigarettes that burned like the tiny campfires we lit at night back at the beginning of the world (38-40). Though the ending of the poem can be interpreted in various ways, the relationship between Summer Solstice, New York City and the holiday for which the poem is named is clear to the reader after further analysis. The comparison between life and death has been depicted in various ways throughout literature and all areas of the arts because audiences are drawn to the mysteries behind the characters. We long for the unknown, as it opens a door to our imagination and creativity. We already have an ending to the story in our heads before the characters can present us with a resolution. When communism was in Vietnam it hit North of Vietnam and slowly it was going to spread to the South. The ANZUS forces wanted all nations to be under capitalism. Capitalism is where there is private ownership of a business and property. When the news spread about communism there was a fear of communism in Asia and soon Australian. The Australian population was divided when it came to sending Australian soldiers to the Vietnam to help the America in the war. Some Australians felt that the decision to go to war in Vietnam was a good idea. These groups were the liberal government catholic church. Some groups like the R.S.L opposed to going to Vietnam War and the s.o.s mums and the Protestant Churches. When the Menzies government declared publicly that Australian troops were going to be sent to Vietnam there was a huge division in Australian society. Many people supported the governments decision and many people opposed the governments decision. The Liberal Party was all the way with the Menzies decision and the actions he had taken. When Menzies decided resigned in 1966. Harold Holt had taken over his position, the liberal party was behind him in every decision he made. Holt brought Australia in a very close relationship with America. He was very close friend with the American President Lyndon Baines Johnson. People referred to him as LBJ. In 1966 after a visit to Washington DC, where Holt was given a kind welcoming by Johnson, he acknowledged that when it came to Vietnam, Australia was behind America and All the way with LBJ. If South Vietnam were to fall to communism, and as the domino effect theory suggested would happen to other Asian countries like Thailand, Myanmar and Malay a were to follow and after the world would go under communism. Many people didnt even care about Vietnam until they herd it was going to be under communism. Beside the reaction at the election polls, opinion polls also showed widespread support among the people for the government decision to go to war. In a Morgan Gallup a poll held in May 1965, 52%  said they supported government policy in Vietnam, 37%  opposed it and 11%  were undecided. Some Australians thought that going to war was the right thing to do as some Australians have that mentally. The anti-war protest began in 1962 when the first Australian troops were sent to Vietnam to fight with America. Most of the protest/anti-war movement was strongly against conscription. Many of the trade unions called the governments support of Americas decisions and foreign policy in Vietnam blood for dollars, or diggers for dollars. They believed the Australian government believed that if they sacrifice Australian troops America will boost Australias economy. In later years, no other group would be more associated with anti-war activities, but reaction in the universities immediately after the announcement was quite mixed, with some support as well as opposition.  Every evening, television broadcast the horror of Vietnam around the world and brought it into Australian homes. By 1970, the anti-war sentiment had rapidly grown into huge rallies, marches, church services, sit-ins and candlelight processions. These united protest movements demanded a moratorium (a suspension) of the Vi etnam War. The Vietnam War moratorium rallies of 1970 appealed to people as a way of displaying their support for the end of the war. The first Moratorium Day was held in the United States with hundreds of thousands of people stopping work in a mass protest demanding that the United States government withdraw from Vietnam immediately.   Psychologically, Australia had been prepared for another war since the conflict in Korea. Compulsory military training and universal conscription had been briefly re-introduced in 1951. The Australian people had been told so often to prepare for war that they all thought it was only a matter of time before they would have to go into battle with the communists. Many people were thinking why wait until its too late and fight them when they invade our own land lets go out and meet this threat head on. This reason is pretty straightforward and is linked to the fear of communism. Geographically, Vietnam is on Australias doorstep. If South Vietnam were to fall to communism, and as the domino effect theory suggested would happen other Asian countries like Thailand, Myanmar and Malaya were to follow. So Australia to go to war, in my opinion, was the right thing to do.

At the beginning of our project we considered Bertolt Brecht as a possible practitioner for our piece. By using his alienation technique we planned to create a multi-media theatre performance. As a collective, we considered doing this by examining relevant topics and implementing a mixture of verbatim theatre and devised script techniques. However, Augusto Boal is the name of the practitioner that we mainly used throughout the show. We chose Boal, because of the nature of his techniques, which allowed us to experiment with various themes and ideas throughout the performance. Our genuine idea was to create a piece that would show how the media can be used as a source of manipulation of the mass population. Furthermore, showing how the government can use this medium in their advantage, hence controlling the minds of the masses. We based this idea on Boal’s techniques that would involve the audience’s participation. A member of our group came up with the idea of luring the audience into believing that something is real, when in fact it was completely made-up by our group. By using Boal’s theatre techniques such as Forum Theatre, Joker System, Newspaper Theatre and Image Theatre we set out to convince our audience that the British government are planning to release into the atmosphere a new chemical compound called E307 that slows down cells degeneration, thus making people live longer and be healthier. The E307 compound stemmed from our initial idea to create a gas called â€Å"Anarchy Gas† that would have been used to counteract and absorb some of the nuclear radiation over Ukraine after the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986 and eventually speed up the neutralization process. Other peoples actions, suggestions and reactions make a considerable difference to our lives. This has great significance and concludes that we need to care about each other. The playwright of An Inspector Calls, J.B. Priestley, wrote this play for several essential and specific reasons. One of the key ideas was based on the theme of responsibility. In this essay, I have focused on the same ideas. Furthermore, I will carefully analyse and compare two very contrasting character in the play. I have chosen to do my research and comparison on Mrs Birling and Sheila Birling. And to help me analyse them I will use quotes from the play. An Inspector Calls is a play, which was written by John Boynton Priestley in 1945 (set in 1912), and was staged in the theatre on the 1st of October 1946. Priestley uses the play as an example of what can happen if we ignore the feelings of others. Priestley believed a great deal in socialism and used the play to influence people to be socialists. An Inspector Calls is a play about a family called the Birlings. One day, they were celebrating the engagement of their only daughter, Sheila, while they were enjoying themselves; an inspector approaches their house and turns the joyful and thrilling night into misery. Every character gives a first impression, and Sheila is one of them. Sheila is a pretty girl in her twenties, very pleased with life and rather excited. My fist impressions about Sheila was that she is an immature, naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve girl but as the play advanced I was proved very wrong. The latter parts of this essay will provide evidence so. In 1912, Britain was at the height of the Edwardian society, known as the Golden age. A quarter of the world belonged to Britain meaning that it was coloured red on the globe of the world. The British Empire was the most vast and powerful since the Romans-the best nation in the world. Theatres, musicals, prom concerts and film were making a vital impact as it entertained the Edwardian population. The upper classes (such as the Birlings) led such a lavish life that the Edwardian era is now infamous for. However, despite the illusions of these secure times, many of the cities were overflowing with prejudice and crooks. There was a huge division between the upper and lower classes. The higher classes barely knew the existence of the underprivileged. I personally thought that this play was very effective as J.B. Priestley wrote it at a significant time. In 1947 Britain had just come to end of a devastating world war, where families suffered from immense losses and society was desperate for a fairer, more equal lifestyle. Priestley realised that socialism was becoming increasingly popular and he was rewarded by the play. He effectively used crucial hints in this play to ensure that discrimination in Edwardian time was not repeated. The inspector is the most thought-provoking and mysterious character in the entire play. The mysterious element contributes greatly to making him a very interesting character. I did not find a great deal out about the Inspector but we are given hints and clues from the way he speaks and we are forced to piece together our own ideas about his identity and intentions. The role of the Inspector is very noteworthy for the play. He uses very simple techniques and he moves the play along. By moving the play along he encourages the characters to tell their stories. The Inspector could be considered as a narrator for the vast variety of contributions he makes. I transpired this point because he was accused of being an impostor in the play. J.B. Priestley has made the Inspector an old mysterious and thought-provoking person. In this way, the audience are forced into judging and reaching personal conclusions about him. So, the main role of the Inspector was to promote and change the thoughts of the Birling family. There are many connotations within the name Inspector Goole. As an Inspector, he has come to investigate or inspect the family members and their actions. Goole is a similar sounding to the word Ghoul, a ghost or phantom. It introduces a very eerie spirit-like feeling to the play as if the Inspector is not real. The inspectors final speech dramatically contrasts his use of language throughout the play. He uses simple language, which allows the members of the family to relay their versions of events. He moves from commenting on one particular person to all of those people who are cruelly and unnecessarily exploited in society, millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths. This is Priestleys main message: we are all responsible for each other. Before the Inspector disembarked, Sheila acts arrogantly towards Eric and Gerald. But she demonstrates respect for her mother and father but with a tone of undermining. Sheila is very happy about her engagement to Gerald but with this of tone towards her family, I feel that she is trying to remind them that this is her special day and that they should not fail to remember it. I fell this because she tries to change the subject of the talk to herself. Arthur (Mr Birling) says I do not think you ought to talk business on an occasion like this and Sheila states Neither to I. All wrong. When the Inspector arrives he uses different interrogation approaches to get his answers from his suspects. Sheila responds to the Inspector in a very honest way. After coming back into the room, she is very sincere with everybody. Sheila answers her questions and queries as honestly as she can, she is genuinely sorry for what she did to Eva Smith and contributing to her death, Yes but it didnt seem to be anything very terrible at the time. Dont you understand? And if I could help her now I would. After her confession, Sheila is eager for everybody to confess to what they supposedly did to Eva Smith. When questioned, Sheila breaks into tears. When questioned, Sheila and Eric have broken down and confessed for their indecency after being just asked a few questions. Sheila was shown a picture of the girl, which she had fired, from Millwards. She recognizes the picture and runs out of the room sobbing. She comes back in and says, You knew it was me all the time, didnt you? This clearly shows that Sheila is an honest girl. Sybil on the other hand answers the Inspectors questions with very short and few word answers. The inspector shows her a photo and says, Do you recognize her? Sybil then says, No. Why should I? Which is a blatant lie because she may think that the inspector knows nothing about this case but really he does or hes very clever and bluffing. The younger characters feel remorse for what they have done; Sybil does not even pity the poor girl. I am very sorry, but I think she has only herself to blame. But then Mrs Birlings opinion is hat Eva should not have used the respectable Birling name, lied about where she came from and why she wanted help from her charity. The difference between classes at that particular time was very clear. The Birlings are obviously a rich family and their name is highly respectable. For Eva to use the name was a big insult to Sybil. However, towards Sheilas engagement. Sybil acts normal because it is the engagement of her daughter. She says that she is happy for her daughter and her fiancà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ but does not use emotion, tone of voice or body language to convey this. Sybil seems very cold towards her family; she does not show affection at all, not even through speech. I suppose that this is how typical high-class women were expected to act. Sybil having had much more life experience knows how people of different classes should speak to her. Lower-class people should speak to her with respect because without people like her husband and their factories a lot of people would be without work. As soon as the Inspector comes and speaks to her normally, she is shocked. I think you can tell this by her short answers that go straight to the point. I meant what I said. Most of what she says is never more than a line long. I think that the Inspector realised this and plays on it, but this back fires because Sybil does not like being spoken to like this, so she is very short and avoids the main point that the Inspector is trying to achieve from her. This is very clever, meaning the Inspector actually has to know everything. With the other characters he just mentions a name and asks a few questions and he will have the whole story. Sybil believes that an unfamiliar person cannot embarrass her. Sybil however stays calm and again does not show any emotions. She doesnt let this stranger intimidate her because she feels she did the right thing by her charity of which she is the chairperson and is a great influence on the overall decision of who they should help. Every other character except Sybil feels remorse for what they have done. To conclude I have to say that I found that age does affect the way the Edwardian family act. If Sheila was older and more grown up then she would have known that someone not of her class, can not intimidate her if she knows how to react. Sybil however, obviously knows how to respond but she is certainly arrogant. Also, if Sheila was older she would have known that she does not have to be ashamed of her actions to justify them. I f your actions cannot be justified then they cannot be wrong. Sheilas actions were not justified enough. Mrs Birling remains pompous and proper throughout the whole episode. In the play, I have learnt many fundamental things. The ending is a mystery and leaves the audience thinking. This ending takes the audience back to the beginning when the inspector arrives. It leaves us pondering whether the Inspector was some kind of spirit warning towards the Birlings. This adds to the dramatic tension of the play. I think the play was a success in making it dramatic and that issues such as homelessness and refugees have changed since the play was written but still has the same effect on the audience. I think the moral of the play has contributed greatly. Think of the least unfortunate and the Birlings, and carefully analyse how both were treated. This play would challenge the audience with their moral beliefs of right and wrong. If you have done something wrong then the play makes you think about it and what you should do if you are in this situation again. The important thing is to try and correct it because it might just blow out of portion. This is shown well in the play when Sheila realises that she should have said something about Erics drinking problem as it is the main reason that he got involved in this situation. The main purpose of the play is that it wants people to improve on, to have more consideration for everybody and life does not revolve around money but compassion for others. Another message is underlined throughout the play is that all classes have different wealth but when it comes to feelings and sensitivities, we are all equal. The final message of the play is a plea for changes, a change in human nature first, then society. People have to learn that private behaviour has public outcomes. The play was correct.
